The Okanagan is certainly among the premier wine producing regions in Western Canada. Everywhere you go you can find one of the many Okanagan wineries or vineyards that pepper the landscape very close by. Wine makes up a substantial portion of the appeal of the area. But which wines are worth your time and money? This is a question we at Green Square have been pondering, so you don’t have to. Hence why we made a list of some of our favourite local wines made right here in Okanagan wineries. Let’s get down to it, shall we?
The intimidating-sounding Gerwurztraminer is a red wine with a distinct floral scent that pairs very well with spicy foods or roast turkey. Thornhaven, as a family-owned winery, has really got cultivating this particular wine, really bringing out the flavour with their variations on it.
Another fairly arduously-named wine, the Ehrenfelzer is a sweet white wine that’s well-suited for casual sipping on the patio. Furthermore, we aren’t the only ones who like this one either; the 2016 vintage Cedar Creek Ehrenfelzer won “Gold” for best of its class at the Pacific Rim International Wine Competition.
The Pinot Noir from Tantalus is a dark red wine blended in French oak barriques before bottling. Wine reviewer David Lawrason describes the 2013 Tantalus vintage of Pinot Noir as “a stylish, youthful pinot with fairly deep colour” and we’d tend to agree. A nice, energetic wine.
Sandhill has a lovely 2016 Cabernet/Merlot blend wine that’s 44% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Franc, and 14% Cabernet Sauvignon. The unusually dry and hot year of 2016 in an already dry and hot Okanagan combined to create good conditions for growing the necessary fruit for this blend.
